Labor groups support labor senatorial bets for the 2019 midterm election!
Manila, Philippines — “We need to put flesh and blood in actual practice to the rights to organize unions, to collective bargaining negotiations and to peaceful concerted activities including the right to strike as guaranteed by the fundamental law!”
This is the message of Attorney Sonny Matula, national president of the Federation of Free Workers (FFW) after he and Attorney Allan Montano, former national president of FFW was endorsed by Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) for their senatorial bids in the coming mid-term 2019 national election.
Matula and Montano are running under the Labor Party-Philippines (LPP).
As chairperson of NAGKAISA (UNITED) Labor Coalition which include TUCP, FFW and SENTRO, Matula expressed the broadest labor movement’s solidarity with the officers and members of TUCP who celebrated their 43rd founding Anniversary last December 14, 2018.
“We are one with you in the work to organize all types of workers, to organize more, organize better and unite the voice of workers,” Atty Matula said.
Congressman Raymond Mendoza, president of TUCP, the largest national trade union in the country formed in 1975 and affiliated with the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) together with FFW, KMU, and SENTRO, proclaimed TUCP’s support for Matula and Montano as the two labor senatorial aspirants.
“We are grateful and honored for the endorsement of the TUCP for MATULA’s and MONTANO’s senatorial bids,” Rep. Mendoza said.
Matula and Montano appreciated and humbly thanks the endorsement by Cong. Mendoza, Attorney Arnel Dolendo and the leadership of TUCP for the trust and confidence for both of them in the senatorial race.
“I remember Tony Blair and Lee Kuan Yew who were all lawyers for the workers being endorsed by their unions in Britain and Singapore, respectively,” Matula explained.
He said, that with the support of the miners and other workers, labor lawyer Tony Blair won and became the prime ministers of Great Britain. While labor lawyer Lee Kuan Yew got elected and became the prime minister of Singapore after the manufacturing, port and transport workers rally behind him.
He adds, “I remember….Being a newsboy delivering newspapers to ALU -TUCP office in Butuan City in 1979 to 1982. The kindness of ALU staff giving snacks and sometimes free lunch to said newsboy is still etched in my mind. Now we get the historic support of TUCP.”
Montano said that both him and Atty. Matula are committed to exert the best for the workers, to create decent jobs with living wages, to empower them through their unions and give social protection to those who have less in life.
“Once elected in the Senate, we will be with you to champion our legislative agenda which TUCP Party List, AKBAYAN and Partido Manggagawa had already started in the House of Reps”, Montano explained.
“Together, we will continue to expand and defend our workers’ democratic and republican ideals for the common good in the Senate,” Montano added.
Prior to TUCP’s endorsement, the national convenors of NAGKAISA (UNITED) also decided to support the senatorial bids of Matula and Montano. While Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) endorsed Atty. Neil Colmenares and Matula for senators at its national Congress attended by 500 delegates in Baguio City last Oct 24. CPM
